Sex: do it for the kids

I'm nervous, hold me.

My portfolio binder has been confirmed delivered to GA Tech on Saturday, but my transcripts haven't yet. Also, one of my references hasn't submitted their reference letter yet. Deadline's tommorrow, time to send a friendly reminder letter.

OCD?

Armed with some delivery confirmation numbers and too much caffiene, I've started checking the Postal Service site like... someone who checks that a lot. Even though I know it won't arrive until at least tomorrow. Don't come too near me, I'm dangerous.

To the wild blue yonder

I just finished mailing off my portfolio and transcripts, priority mail, with delivery confirmation. Should arrive Saturday. I feel like I've sent my child off in a plane to visit someone, and now I just have to wait by the phone to hear when they've landed and gotten there safely. Also, I feel like having a drink.

Can't wait to leave

Yesterday, trying to find somewhere at which I could print off my portfolio, I found out that Terre Hause has no do-it-yourself copy place. The closest thing I found was Sir Speedy, a place where you bring in your professional work, or have them do it for you, and they print things like wedding invites, press packets, that kind of thing. The nice people there let me back into the printing room and worked with me to find the best print-off for my small piece of work. They even charged me half of what they normally do to open a file and print a page because my files were so small, it was something new, and I did most of the work. We even joked about giving me a job there, now that I know how it all works, plus I'm a mac girl.

That's Hot

Inspired by the Hilton girl and last night's CSI, I'm going to start incorporating "that's hot" into my list o' phrases.
I don't see why it's not used more often by people like, say, Katie Couric. Or Connie Chung
Examples:
"You've been sexually molested by rats since you were five? That's hot."

"So, you say your country has been ripped apart by war, you had to bury your mother without a shovel, and eat the family dog? That's hot."

"You've been depressed for years following the decline in your career, and you keep fighting like an aging prom queen for new stories? That's hot"

Meep

I think I have a good stab at a portfolio finished. Some of you lucky readers will be asked, in the next 24 hours, to proof it, make sure that everything works as you expect, and that I didn't leave out any words. Thank you, I'll totally be sending happy thoughts.

10,000!

On Thursday, my site broke 10,000 hits! Whoo!

Who am I?

Sometimes, I'll go to Blogger's recently updated list, tab out 10 or so sites, and read for an afternoon. I sort of feel like I'm looking ino other people's worlds without them knowing. (But then I remember that the blogs are public and snap myself out of feeling like a voyeur.)
Sometimes, when I really enjoy what they've written, I'll bookmark it, then put it in my Kinja digest if I find myself going back to it often. My rules for randomly selecting blogs is simple: look for a blog with a decent address, something that seems mature. That's how I found Kristine, who wants to know, "Palila who are you??"

So, to answer your question, Kristine- I'm a bartender who also works for a start-up technology company and plays football. I'm an Apple girl, applying to grad school, and used to being the only girl in a group, because of the field I'm in. I'm fairly harmless, I enjoy reading your blog, and I think this was the first post on the page when I first found your site. Go tech girls!

Dissection

At AppleMatters, they have dissected and iPod Shuffle. Not for the faint of heart (I put my iPod away before looking at this.)

Happy Birthday [sort of]!

Happy Birthday, TCB, even though we're celebrating it in 6 months, because you're not a fan of the January, right-after-christmas date.

A stabbing pain that remembered to twist

I think I made a little mistake. In the effort to complete a mini-goal of being able to run for 30 minutes straight, I went running this afternoon at the SRC. After my 1.5 mile run, I kept walking for the rest of the time, then did some light upper-body weights and stretching. And now, my hammies are screaming, "What the hell did you do to us?!" and threatening to go on strike. What more can I give you, hamstrings?

Lacking

Harvard president says, "Women lack 'Natural Ability' in some fields," and, you know, I couldn't agree more. It's definitely because of being a woman that I just suck at math, and it's because of my two X chromosomes that I can't find the power switch on a computer, much less utilize one. Through Summers's remarks, I've figured out why I can't land a technical job: my boobs. Of course, all women are exactly like his daughter: naming trucks like dolls. That's the best basis for sweeping generalizations. You know, I should send him my resume - maybe I could get a secretarial job in his office with my womanly language and cooking skills. Oh wait, cooking involves science, so I'm apparently not good at that either. Damn.

iSock

My iPod protector thing finally arrived, so Alice no longer has to live in a sock. The armband came, too, so I can wear it to run. Or when I do kitchen Tai Chi. Or if I go to a funeral; it's black.

Getting down to it

The deadline for GA Tech is Feb 1, so I'm trying to finish up my work sample. It's proving quite a challenge, narrowing down my 7 items to the 4 best. My goal: Be done in 1 week.

Yes I am

This weekend, I cooked, baked and boiled. From basic ingredients (and what I happened to have in my fridge), I made chicken and stars, brownies, pasta with grapes and goat cheese, chocolate-stuffed rolls, and a pizza where I woke up with only the ingredients to make the dough and several inches of snow on the ground. TCB and I walked down to CVS and Dollar General and got some string cheese, spaghetti sauce mix, ham and pineapple, and mixed up the sauce mix with tomato soup, since I didn't read the instructions and get tomato paste. That pizza was so good, and I have sauce leftover. I'm totally cooking that again. Tomorrow.
And then this morning, i find Cooking For Engineers, with useful diagrams on how to prepare the food, plus instructions on what to do with the ingredients. Can't wait to start cooking!

2005 Resolutions

-Wear out two pairs of running shoes
-Get all of those pesky medical appointments done
-Take more pictures
-Leave the Haute

Now, I don't know where I'll go or how many miles it takes to wear out a pair of shoes, but I've already had my eyes checked (and gotten a new pair of glasses.) They're supercute. I'll post a picture after this weekend.

Mixed bag

This morning, I woke up at 6 am, mostly because I'm used to getting up then, with a terrible pain in my tummy and a strong urge to puke. I didn't, but I'm suspecting that something I ate last night has given me a little touch of food poisoning.
But! I came to work for 5 minutes, afer shopping for some clear soda, and found my iPod on my desk, a full 3 days early.

Happiness is...

...a radiator next to the shower, so that, when stepping out of a warm
shower and facing the chill, your towel is nice and warm. And the pink
pj's (with the counted sheep on them) are warm when you've finished
drying off. Then, once you've finally woken up in the morning (to a
chilly apartment because you came home drunk and left the inside door
to the porch open again) and
stumbled towards the bathroom, your clothes and unmentionables are
toasty, delaying the harsh reality of a hangover in an Indiana winter
for a little longer.

See-ling

I went and talked to Upstairs Neighbor today. Actually, I talked to the him half of Upstairs Neighbor, to tell him that the crack in my ceiling has been getting bigger, and now I'm worried about it (since I heard bits of plaster falling from it when I couldn't sleep last night.) Found out that they don't have a treadmill, his wife does TaeBo.

So

Because someone in my apartment has an unprotected wireless network (I think it's from the landlady, she was talking about installing them last year), I'm bidding on a wireless card (Since I'm too lazy to go to the Apple store when I'm in L'ville.) Everyone will benefit. I'll get to check email and do things at home, and you all will get to see drunk posts like this one I typed out this weekend:

Wen walking home in half a foot of snow, from the bally
half a foot is kinf=da deep
TH First Nastional has heaten sidewalk
the birds know
sings. even for causes you belive in, aren't worth the possible tqwisted ankke to clear them off

As a little background, it had been snowing when I walked out of my apartment to meet Voda and Goods at Simerall's, which is two blocks from my house. I'd had a couple glasses of wine already. At Sim's, I dropped my camera and the zoom-y part of the camera got stuck (fixed that today, just kinda popped it back into place.) Then we went to the Bally, I got really tired from getting up earlyish and staying up late the night before, working. So I walked home in the 6 inches of still-falling snow with snowflakes as big as your head. Once I got home, I realised I'd semi-locked myself out. I'd put the chain across the door to which I have a key and left through the other door (that auto-locks.) So I "broke" into my apartment by unscrewing the chain through the door from the porch with my gardening tools. It was a good night.

Another Step

GA Tech emailed me today, telling me that they my application is ready to progress to the self-managed letters of recommendation. Now, do I waive or not waive my right to view the letters..?

New Year tidings

Happy New Year! This one sucked immensely less than last year. I rang in the New Year on the way to being happily drunk, with a very Cute Boy of my very own next to me, and a glass of champagne in hand, instead of on my way to being unhappily drugged up, with my sister and her boyfriend sitting near the hospital bed, sipping cranberry ginger ale. The best part of that was the compression socks that inflated and deflated; it was like always getting a foot and calf massage. The best part of this was snuggling up to a warm TCB in a chilly house.
